SUMMARY:My Once Upon a Time\, Lesson 1: Stories Live in Photographs
DESCRIPTION:Lesson 1 — Stories Live Inside Photographs \n\n\n\nWhat we learned today: Personal narrative is a true or imagined story told from a personal point of view — it uses literary tools to make a moment feel real and meaningful. The story can be true\, partly true\, or invented. We also looked at how the five literary elements — characterization\, setting\, plot\, figurative language\, and emotional/persuasive language — work together inside a single story. They are never separate boxes. They work like musical notes in a song. \n\n\n\nWhat we practiced: We compared three texts — a news article\, an encyclopedia entry\, and a personal narrative — and discovered what makes personal narrative different from both. We read Grandfather’s Journey aloud and heard the unit prompt for the first time. We annotated the teacher’s model story in five color-coded groups and found sentences where two elements work at the same time. \n\n\n\nWhat belongs in your Story Notebook from this lesson: Your definition of personal narrative in your own words; One sentence from the teacher’s model story where two elements work at the same time — name both \n\n\n\nMentor text used: Grandfather’s Journey by Allen Say — a life told through photographs; belonging and longing \n\n\n\nIf you missed this class\, do this first: Review the unit prompt: Write a story inspired by a photograph. Your reader should finish it and feel something. Obtain a copy of the teacher’s model story and underline examples of each of the five elements using different colored pens. In your Story Notebook\, write your own definition of personal narrative and copy one sentence where two elements work at the same time — name both elements. \n\n\n\nIMPORTANT: Bring a photograph to Lesson 2.

SUMMARY:My Once Upon a Time\, Lesson 2: What Is This Photo Saying?
DESCRIPTION:Lesson 2 — What Is This Photo Saying? \n\n\n\nWhat we learned today:  A story seed is specific. A story idea is general. Specific is where stories live. The Iceberg Test: does this moment have more beneath it than appears on the surface? The So What? Test: can you complete “This moment matters because…” in one specific line? \n\n\n\nWhat we practiced:  We looked at our photographs in three rounds (surface / questions / feeling) and completed a five-prompt Story Seed Harvest. We identified our “So What?” sentence. \n\n\n\nWhat belongs in your Story Notebook from this lesson:  Story Seed Harvest — all five prompts answered; Your “So What?” sentence written in large letters at the top of a fresh page \n\n\n\nMentor text used:  Saturdays and Teacakes by Lester Laminack — a memory of a grandmother held inside a Saturday ritual \n\n\n\nIf you missed this class\, do this first:  Bring your photograph. Complete the Story Seed Harvest in your Story Notebook (see the five prompts on the board or ask your teacher). Write your “So What?” sentence in large letters on a fresh page. This sentence is your compass for the whole unit.

SUMMARY:My Once Upon a Time\, Lesson 3: The Shape of a Story
DESCRIPTION:Lesson 3 — The Shape of a Story \n\n\n\nWhat we learned today:  Personal Narrative Structure: Entry Point (begin in the middle)\, The Before (context)\, The Moment (central scene — time slows down)\, The Turn (something shifts)\, The After (what is carried forward). Scene = camera slows down. Summary = camera speeds up. \n\n\n\nWhat we practiced:  We read When I Was Young in the Mountains and mapped Saturdays and Teacakes onto the five-part arc. We completed the Story Arc Planning Sheet in bullet points. We then answered five questions to verify our blueprint was structurally sound before drafting begins. \n\n\n\nWhat belongs in your Story Notebook from this lesson:  Completed Story Arc Planning Sheet — your blueprint for the whole story; Five verification questions answered in your Story Notebook \n\n\n\nMentor text used:  When I Was Young in the Mountains; Saturdays and Teacakes \n\n\n\nIf you missed this class\, do this first:  This is one of the two most important lessons. Obtain a blank Story Arc Planning Sheet from your teacher and complete it in bullet points using your photograph and your “So What?” sentence as guides. Then answer the five verification questions in your Story Notebook. If you cannot answer one of the five questions\, that part of the arc needs more thinking before you begin drafting. Send a copy of your completed Story Arc Planning Sheet to Ann\, Angela\, and Lori in the WhatsApp group chat.
