Severe Weather, Part I

Pre-Work:

This pre-work assignment will help prepare you for our upcoming lesson on severe weather in North Texas. It will help you learn important vocabulary and begin thinking about weather safety. Please complete the following tasks before our next class:

  1. Artwork Analysis

Examine the two paintings shown below. Imagine you are the artist.

  • What title would you give painting #1?
  • What title would you give painting #2?
  1. Weather Vocabulary

Make a list of 8-10 words you would use to describe the storm conditions in these paintings. Categorize your words by:

  • Sea conditions (waves, etc.)
  • Sky conditions (clouds, etc.)
  • Emotional impact (feelings the storm creates)
  1. Visual Comparison

Write 5-8 sentences that explain:

  • The differences you notice in how each artist portrays the people
  • The differences you notice in how each artist portrays the storm
  • Which painting creates a stronger emotional response for you and why
  1. Personal Connection
  • Think about a time you were in a storm. Write 3-5 sentences describing the storm and how it made you feel.
  • There are many saying in English related to weather, including “April showers bring May flowers.” Write down at least one weather-related expression or saying from your culture.
