Reference · 12 Essential Topic Domains

Topic Coverage Map

Every subtopic in this inventory was cross-referenced against six professional B1→C1 curricula: Passages 2, Cambridge Compact Advanced, Viewpoint 2, Empower C1, English Vocabulary in Use Upper-Intermediate, and Interchange Level 3. A subtopic earns a lesson slot only if it appears in two or more of these six curricula. Source count alone isn't sufficient: every subtopic is also evaluated against whether it serves this student population — adult immigrant women who navigate American systems for themselves and their families.

Key terms

Domain — one of the 12 broad topic areas the curriculum is organized around (e.g., Health & the Body, Relationships & Social Life). Every lesson is anchored to at least one domain, and every domain is broken down into a subtopic inventory below.

HIGH CONSENSUS — the subtopic appears in three or more of the six professional curricula. Multiple independent publishers all treat this as core content at this level, so it's prioritized for lesson time.

EVIDENCED — the subtopic appears in one or two of the six curricula. Still real textbook backing, just less universal. Within this tier, two sources is stronger footing than one; a single-sourced subtopic needs a clear, explicitly named case for real-world relevance to this population to earn its place, rather than being included by default.

P = primary focus · * = activated through Capstone topic choice · — = not a primary focus for that unit. Note: this reflects the matrix as originally documented; Unit 3's D3/D7 assignment (reflected in the Unit 3 draft page) has since evolved and this matrix has not yet been reconciled with that change.

A note on D6 (Work, Education & Professional Life): most students are not employed full-time, or at all, so this domain is not taught as personal job-seeking or workplace English. It's taught only where it serves the actual navigator role these women play — describing a spouse's career, supporting a child's education, understanding the professional context that affects the family.
